Gum disease creates a traumatic effect on the gums, jawbone, and teeth. This bacterial infection destroys the gum tissue and teeth roots and causes the bone structure to lose their support. Tooth extractions can sometimes be a necessary procedure. At Perio & Implant at Washington Metro, we treat our patients to help restore their dental health, providing them with healthy teeth and gums that not only restore their smiles but improves their oral health over time.
Periodontal Disease and Tooth Loss
Periodontal disease is one of the most significant causes of tooth loss in adults. It is caused by plaque that forms on the teeth and deteriorates the enamel and gum tissues over time. In its early stages, gingivitis produces red, swollen gums that bleed easily. Still, in its advanced stages, periodontal disease can create pockets of gums that pull away at the teeth, causing them to shift and become loose over time. Because of the disease’s nature, tooth extractions can help restore your teeth to health and provide further treatment for missing teeth with dental implants.
Tooth Extraction Procedures
Your tooth extraction will be performed once you’ve received your initial consultation with Dr. Jean Li, who will examine the condition of your mouth and perform any necessary procedures needed to clean the gums and teeth to avoid further infection. The need for a tooth extraction will be determined by any causing factors, including periodontal disease, to assure that the tooth can be preserved as much as possible before needing an extraction. If Dr. Li determines that you need a tooth extraction, then she will perform the following steps:
- The tooth will be loosened with a dental elevator, which will allow for sufficient space for Dr. Li to have access to the area.
- Once loosened, the surrounding area will be treated with anesthetic around the tooth, gums, and bone tissue to prevent pain sensations.
- The procedure begins with the tooth clamped by forceps, which will gain a secure hold of the tooth to prevent further injury. Dr. Li will carefully use the forceps to tear away at the ligaments holding the tooth in place.
- Once removed, Dr. Li will treat and disinfect the tooth extraction site and the surrounding areas.
If needed, Dr. Li can perform several tooth extractions to help prevent the onset of tooth decay, gum disease, and other tooth conditions that affect your mouth’s overall health.
